Finding The Sweet Spot at Megan Romano’s Chocolate & Spice
Being that tonight is the official Grand Opening, I figured it was about time I posted my "preview" of Megan Romano's new Chocolate & Spice cafe near Summerlin in suburban Las Vegas.
For those who don't know her name, Romano is the former Patissier and Chocolatier at Aureole in Mandalay Bay, where her creations were on par with the best French-trained pastry chefs on the Strip. After a long period of waiting to find the right independent opportunity, she's opened in this almost nondescript space (from the outside anyway) on West Sahara Ave. offering savory and sweet pastries, world-class fine chocolates (they also mail order), fantastic gelato, soups, salads, quiches and some other rotating lunch items. She drafted sous chef Keris Kuwana, also from Mandalay Bay, to be her second in command. So, that's a lot of serious experience in a "simple" spot.
Basically, it's a well rounded cafe, with some pleasant seating. The difference is, everything here is done with excellence, though the prices are on par with any average place. Romano was nice enough to sample me on their elegant but hearty tomato basil soup, balanced, tender chicken salad, and what may be the best turkey sandwich I have ever had (house roasted turkey, red pepper, pesto aioli, bibb lettuce on ciabbata). Okay, I'll hedge my bets: one of the top five turkey sandwiches of my life. At least. I could not stop eating it, and when you do what I do, that really tells you something.
I've been a fan of Romano's treats for some time, so you could say I am biased. You could also say I went in with very high expectations. And they were exceeded.
Let me put it to you this way, Las Vegans: If this cafe were in New York City or Los Angeles or San Francisco or Chicago, there would be a line out the door. So, Go.
